Day 34: The worst thing about coming home

By 24 September 2015May 30th, 2023No Comments

Some people may think the worst thing about coming home after an extended vacation is returning to responsibility. Nope. Others may mourn the necessity of following a strict schedule again or even paying bills. Not me, I welcome it. I find freedom in the nine to five. What I fear the most in returning is the inevitable trip conversations that will be had.

Don’t think this is us saying “Don’t ask me about the trip!” Though if you wanted to wait a week, that would be okay. This is more a fear of the inevitable conversations we will start or others will start that sound like traveler place dropping.

If you’re unfamiliar with place dropping it’s the phenomenon that happens when someone gets back from an extended vacation full of stories from their destination. Most place drops sound something like this

“When we were sitting at a corner cafe in Paris…”
“That reminds me of the time in Athens when…”
“This food isn’t quite as good as the food we had in Venice…”

You’ve heard and said these things many times. Most of the time it’s fine. I just notice when you first get back the amount of these statements is off the charts and it starts to sound braggy. So in the spirit of openness and accountability I’m going to make you a deal.

Try to give me a week to resettle back into life before bombarding us with questions. Be gracious to us as we place drop in every conversation. If you hold up your part of the bargain we will allow you 10 “We get it, you went to Europe” comments to put us in our place. But after ten, you’re just a jerk, so keep track.

I think if we live by these rules we can overcome the worst part of returning home from a trip and resettle into our normal lives again. Hallelujah!

Cheers,
B&B
