Day 31: Home-Ish

Not to be confused with Amish…. Anyone? … No? …

We have finally set down on U.S. soil. There are not many feelings like walking into a terminal and being able to read all the signs. We’re in Spencer, MA, for a few days to re-coup before flying home. Let me tell you… we need it. Currently we’re still on Athens time about 6 hours ahead of east coast time. I’m hoping by the time we leave we’ll be around Icelandic time. Fingers Crossed.

After taking a regrettable photo at customs, which Bethany will be laughing about for years, we grabbed our bags, got in our rented car and headed to Spencer. Well… first we bought a sim card for my phone so we could have GPS and contact people. Not worth it… In Europe getting a prepaid SIM is easy, in America it’s a whole thing. Sixty-Dollars and one support call later we had GPS. We should have just added it to our car bill…

Before arriving at camp I had a revelation, a glorious revelation. We were going to be at the cabin for nearly three whole days. That’s one extra day that we didn’t know we had when we arrived. What will we do with that extra day? Buy a dozen assorted donuts from Dunkin Donuts…. obviously. Don’t judge, when you have time to spare Dunkin Donuts is glad to take some of it.

We arrived at camp, a.k.a. Bethany’s favorite place on earth, around 1:30 and unloaded our stuff. Camp is a cute little Cabin off a small lake in Spencer, MA. While the cabins around us have been torn down and nice new houses have been replaced, this cabin, builty by Bethany’s grandpa has been up since the 40’s almost unchanged. Of course it’s been updated, porches added, etc, but it never lost it’s small cabin charm. The lake is low this year so rope swimming is out but I have my eye on that paddle boat. Just… not today.

Once we got settled we went out to get food and do laundry, in that order. We ate at the Clam box a Massachusetts staple and Bethany introduced me to Lobster rolls. I’ll give them a pass, but not my favorite. Luckily their clam chowder and milk shakes were on point.

After dinner we reluctantly went to the laundromat Why not? Our clothes are at least two weeks unclean and we have an extra day Though sitting in a laundromat is not ideal when trying to relax, having clean clothes on the next few days is great.

When we got back to camp we relaxed. We turned on the TV, we ate some donuts and looked out on the lake and went to bed around 9:30. It’s good to be home…ish.

Cheers,
B&B
